FARMING

Farming at Rancho Colorado del Norte has always been a mainstay for over one hundred years and continues today. Six years ago, we focused on the production of grass as a feed source for our livestock and horses. An initial fifty acres was sprigged with ‘Coastal Grass” that has spread and become dense. In 2019, we were successful in having three cuts of hay from May to October. This has produced hundreds of six-foot round bales and made us self-sustaining. Plus, we have begun to offer superior bales to the surrounding marketplace. Contact Mr. Rudi Rodriguez at (210) 673-3580.

Also, fifty acres, comprising our S.E. fields have been put into production with “Sudan Grass” for livestock and horse foraging. This grass is high in protein and grows very abundantly. This grass is grown from Spring to Fall. In support of foraging, a combination of  “Bermuda” and “Klein Grass” is grown in pastures and “Sendero’s”. These grasses are also harvested at certain times of the year and receive annual fertilizing and herbicides.

Then, “Winter Oats” are planted for foraging during the cold months to spring. This high protein diet is essential to have healthy livestock and horses. Our S.E. Fields, South and North Sendero’s are planted with these oats. Ultimately, these efforts help supply ample foraging during the winter months. and food plots are planted for livestock and wildlife purposes.

The farm boasts three John Deere Tractors, one for planting and harvesting, one for shredding and one for lawn and general maintenance. Also, an implement inventory consisting of John Deere Hay Cutter, Hay Bailer, Harrow Disk, Planter, Box Blades, and Broadcaster is utilized to supplement our farming operation. Trucks and other vehicles are part of the operation.

Under our farming commitments, we have dedicated to developing a portion of our efforts to fruit tree and grape production. For fruit tree planting we have designated an east to west tract of land that will feature peach, pear, apple and pecan trees. We have selected Texas Peach Trees, South Texas Pear, and Apple Trees and Soft-Shell Pecan Trees. On north to south tract we have already begun grape plantings.

We have chosen to begin with Merlo, Chenin Blanc, and Concord grape cuttings. We have also implemented a “Kniffen Four Cordon System” of grape production. Although all varieties have produced, we feel the strongest and best selection will be the Chenin Blanc white grapes. We believe our native soil has allowed the white grape to be the hardiest and most bountiful of the three vinifera. Therefore, we will concentrate on our future plantings with Chenin Blanc cuttings.

In the future, we will pursue the production of a “Chenin Blanc” wine using the “Rancho Colorado del Norte” label. A tasting room and small store will be added as we make the wine available to the public.
