HUNTING
Wildlife has always been an essential part of the ranch as in years past harvest of the game produced part of the diet for family and workers. In the past, abundant White-tail Deer, Rio Grande Turkey, and Feral Hogs were harvested on the ranch. Today, field cameras are installed throughout our “Wildlife Habitat” area to help document and inventory all species of wildlife including predators. As such, we have implemented wildlife management practices that include supplemented feeding and inventory control. We continue to evaluate all species of wildlife to ensure a more beneficial environment for all game animals.
White-tailed Deer is a native species to Texas and our ranch. Presently, two to three dozen deer comprise a targeted herd inhabiting our habitat. This is important to know as we supplement their diet throughout the year. Surrounding the habitat areas are ‘Senderos” that we plant for foraging with beneficial” Sudan Grass and Winter Oats. Currently, we do not have deer hunting for the public, but we continue to harvest animals to help produce healthy animals and a good ratio of Does to Bucks’ Recently, a ten-point Buck was harvested and scored one-fifty on the “Boone & Crockett” scale.
Rio Grande Turkey is also abundant on the ranch and numbers from thirty to forty birds in a family group. The mature males are quite tall and large and sport long beards. The females are also large and produce a “Brood” of ten to twelve chicks. Other game birds are native “Morning Doves” and doves migrating from northern states like Nebraska and Kansas. During the season, from September to November thousand of birds populates the Sunflower Fields. Native “Bob-White” Quail can also be very prolific from year to year. Check with our Outfitter, Charley Regan, for Dove-hunting opportunities.
Also, from October through late Winter a large number of migratory birds including Sand Hill Cranes, Ducks, Wrens, and predatory birds populate the ranching fields and water ponds surrounding us. It is truly a blessing from Mother Nature to provide us with such an array of birds to observe and behold. One spectacular event to behold is the annual “Lift”, the departure of the Sandhill Cranes as they mass in the Northern Sky rotating ever vertically until they reach their determined elevation and fly off to their destination.
The Hunter's Patio
Of all the major improvements on the ranch, the “Hunter’s Patio” is perhaps one of the most unique. It features a two-hundred-foot north to south axis plan.

Hunting Opportunities
Rancho Colorado del Norte is in the Central Zone for Dove hunting and is currently offering Daily Dove Hunting opportunities scheduled and conducted by our designated Outfitter: Mr. Charlie Reagor. Hunting is offered morning and afternoon.
For the past several years we have been very fortunate to have hundreds of Morning Doves migrate to our Sun-flower fields during the hunting season. Also, we are on a White-Wing Dove travel path to and from adjacent water and feeding fields. Of interest to note, we have harvest birds tag from as far away as Nebraska from the North and South from the valley.
The primary hunting area is a fifty-acre field surrounded by three tree-lined fences. In the future, the trees will be pruned to provide cover and shade for most of our hunters. We are also improving an area of large and tall Live-Oak Trees for hunting breaks equipped with tables and chairs.
To book a hunt, contact Charlie Reagor at (830) 297-3929 or contact us.
